The flag of Sweden features a golden-yellow Nordic cross on a blue field, a design whose origins stretch back to at least the sixteenth century, with legend tracing it to a golden cross seen in the sky by King Eric IX during a twelfth-century crusade to Finland. Officially standardized in 1906, the blue and gold are drawn from the Swedish coat of arms—three golden crowns on a blue field—which dates to the reign of King Albert of Mecklenburg in the 1360s. The Nordic cross connects Sweden to the broader Scandinavian family of flag designs pioneered by Denmark. Sweden's flag is flown with particular pride on National Day (June 6) and Midsummer, celebrations deeply tied to the Swedish identity of nature, light, and community.
