The flag of Japan—the Hinomaru, or Circle of the Sun—is among the most minimalist and iconic national flags in the world: a single red disc centered on a pure white field. While it was officially adopted as the national flag only in 1999, the Hinomaru has represented Japan for centuries, rooted in the country's mythology as the Land of the Rising Sun, descended from the sun goddess Amaterasu. The red circle first appeared on fans carried by samurai in the twelfth century and was used as a national symbol since at least the Edo period. Its simplicity is its power—no text, no coat of arms, no stripes, just the sun itself against an empty sky.
