England
The flag of England—the Cross of St. George—is a bold red cross on a white field, one of the simplest and most historic flags in the world. St. George, a Roman soldier martyred in the third century, became England's patron saint during the medieval period, and his cross was adopted as a national emblem during the Crusades. English crusaders wore the red cross to distinguish themselves in battle, and by the fourteenth century it had become the recognized symbol of England. The Cross of St. George forms the dominant layer of the Union Jack, overlaid with the crosses of Scotland and Ireland. Though the Union Jack represents the United Kingdom as a whole, the St. George's cross remains distinctly English—flown at football matches, on St. George's Day, and wherever English identity is celebrated on its own terms.
