The flag of the United Nations features a white world map in azimuthal equidistant projection, centered on the North Pole, surrounded by olive branches on a light blue field. Adopted in 1947, the design was based on a logo created for the 1945 San Francisco Conference that established the UN. The map projection shows all continents equally visible from above, symbolizing the organization's global scope and impartiality. The olive branches are an ancient symbol of peace, framing the world in hope rather than conflict. The pale blue color was chosen to be the opposite of red, the color of war. The United Nations was founded in the aftermath of World War II by 51 nations determined to prevent another global catastrophe. Its flag represents the most ambitious diplomatic experiment in history—the belief that talking is always better than fighting.
