The flag of the Philippines is a horizontal bicolor of blue and red with a white equilateral triangle at the hoist, bearing a golden sun and three five-pointed stars. Designed by Emilio Aguinaldo and sewn in Hong Kong in 1897, it was first unfurled during the declaration of independence from Spain on June 12, 1898. The eight rays of the sun represent the first eight provinces to revolt against Spanish rule. The three stars stand for the major island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Uniquely, the flag can be flown inverted in wartime—red on top signals a state of war, blue on top represents peacetime. It's one of the only flags in the world with a built-in war mode—a design feature as practical and spirited as the Filipino people themselves.
