The flag of Taiwan—officially the Republic of China—features a red field with a blue canton bearing a white sun with twelve rays. The design originated in 1895 as the flag of the revolutionary movement led by Sun Yat-sen to overthrow the Qing dynasty. The white sun represents the spirit of progress, its twelve rays symbolize the twelve months and the twelve traditional Chinese hours. The blue represents liberty and justice, the red stands for fraternity and the blood of revolutionaries. The flag became the national flag of the Republic of China in 1928 and followed the government to Taiwan after the Communist victory on the mainland in 1949. It occupies one of the most politically sensitive spaces of any flag in the world—claimed by some, contested by others, and deeply cherished by the people who live beneath it.
