The flag of Hong Kong features a stylized white bauhinia flower with five petals on a red field, adopted on July 1, 1997, when sovereignty was transferred from the United Kingdom to China. The bauhinia—specifically Bauhinia blakeana, a hybrid orchid tree native to Hong Kong—was chosen as the emblem of the Special Administrative Region, representing harmony and the city's unique character. Each petal contains a red line and a five-pointed star, echoing the stars on China's national flag. The red background aligns with the PRC flag, symbolizing Hong Kong's relationship with the mainland under the 'one country, two systems' framework.
