The flag of South Korea—the Taegukgi—is one of the most philosophically rich national flags in the world. Adopted in 1882 and modified to its current form in 1949, it features a white field representing peace and purity, a central red-and-blue yin-yang symbol (the Taeguk) representing cosmic balance, and four black trigrams from the I Ching in each corner representing heaven, earth, water, and fire. Together, the elements express the Korean vision of a harmonious universe in constant motion. The flag draws from Confucian, Taoist, and Neo-Confucian philosophy, embedding cosmological meaning into national identity.
