Vermont
The flag of Vermont is a serene expression of pastoral beauty and independence. Officially adopted in 1923, it features the state coat of arms centered on a deep blue field. The arms show a green landscape framed by pine boughs, with a tall pine tree in the foreground—long a symbol of New England resilience—standing before mountains and a red cow, representing agriculture and dairy heritage. Above the scene, a stag’s head crowns the shield, while below runs the state motto: Freedom and Unity, reflecting Vermont’s devotion to individual liberty balanced with civic responsibility. Originally an independent republic before joining the Union in 1791, Vermont’s flag retains that spirit—humble yet resolute, a tribute to a people at peace with their land and fiercely protective of their independence.
