The flag of France—the Tricolore—is a vertical tricolor of blue, white, and red, and one of the most influential flag designs in history. Born during the French Revolution in 1789, the blue and red were the traditional colors of Paris, while white represented the monarchy. Together, they symbolized the union of the king with the people—though that union was short-lived. The Tricolore became the banner of revolutionary ideals: liberty, equality, fraternity. Its vertical stripe format broke from the horizontal tradition and was widely imitated across Europe and Latin America throughout the nineteenth century. Napoleon carried it across a continent; the Resistance reclaimed it from Vichy. It has been the flag of republics, empires, and restorations. Few flags have witnessed as much history—or inspired as many imitators.
