The flag of Finland features a blue Nordic cross on a white field, adopted in 1918 shortly after Finland declared independence from Russia. The design follows the Scandinavian cross tradition pioneered by Denmark, positioning Finland within the Nordic family while asserting its distinct identity. The blue represents the country's thousands of lakes and the sky above them, while the white evokes the snow that blankets Finland for much of the year. The colors had been associated with Finnish identity since the nineteenth century, appearing in the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Finland. The flag was designed by artists Eero Snellman and Bruno Tuukkanen, who sought a clean, modern emblem for a newly sovereign nation. It's a flag as spare and beautiful as the Finnish landscape itself—vast, quiet, and deeply felt.
