The flag of Denmark, known as the Dannebrog, is considered the oldest continuously used national flag in the world. According to legend, it fell from the sky during the Battle of Lyndanisse in Estonia on June 15, 1219, inspiring Danish crusaders to victory. While the legend is mythical, the red field with a white Scandinavian cross has been documented since the fourteenth century. The off-center cross design—extending to the edges of the flag with the vertical arm shifted toward the hoist—became the template for all other Nordic flags, including those of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland. Denmark's flag represents not just one nation but an entire design tradition that spans Northern Europe. Simple, ancient, and endlessly influential, the Dannebrog is the mother of all Nordic crosses.
