The flag of Norway features a dark blue Nordic cross outlined in white on a red field, adopted in 1821 during the movement for Norwegian independence. Designed by Fredrik Meltzer, a member of the Storting (parliament), the flag combines the red and blue of the French Tricolor—symbolizing liberty—with the Scandinavian cross inherited from Denmark, which had ruled Norway for over four centuries. The blue cross on red was also seen as a nod to Norway's brief union with Sweden. The result is a flag that is distinctly Norwegian while honoring its Nordic family. Norway's flag is one of the most loved national symbols in the world, flown enthusiastically on Constitution Day (May 17) in parades that rival any national celebration.
