The flag of New York captures the state’s colonial roots, Revolutionary ideals, and enduring symbolism of liberty. Its deep blue field matches the U.S. flag’s blue, reflecting unity and vigilance, while the central coat of arms—first adopted in 1778—tells a visual story of prosperity and freedom. At its heart stands a shield showing the Hudson River with ships sailing beneath a golden sunrise, symbolizing commerce and hope. On either side stand Liberty, holding a staff topped with a Phrygian cap (a classical symbol of freedom from tyranny), and Justice, blindfolded with her sword and scales, representing fairness. Above them, a bald eagle perches on a globe, asserting New York’s global vision.
