The flag of Illinois is a straightforward yet symbolically rich design that highlights both state pride and national unity. Adopted in its current form in 1969, it features the state seal on a white field with the word “ILLINOIS” printed below. The seal itself—first designed in 1868—shows a bald eagle clutching a shield that bears thirteen stars and thirteen stripes, linking Illinois to the original American colonies. In its beak, the eagle holds a banner with the state motto: State Sovereignty, National Union. That delicate balance between independence and loyalty to the Union was particularly meaningful in the post–Civil War era. The sun rising over Lake Michigan in the background symbolizes hope and progress. It’s a clean emblem of renewal—rooted in frontier determination, tempered by unity, and looking confidently toward the horizon.
