The flag of Indiana is a bright, elegant design that captures both the optimism of the early 20th century and the state’s pride in progress. Designed by Paul Hadley and adopted in 1917, it features a gold torch flanked by rays and stars on a deep blue field. The torch symbolizes liberty and enlightenment, while its radiant beams suggest the far-reaching influence of knowledge. Surrounding it are nineteen stars—thirteen for the original colonies, five for the next states admitted to the Union, and a larger one at the top representing Indiana itself as the nineteenth state. The flag’s simplicity and symmetry evoke the balance between tradition and advancement, fitting for a state that has long seen itself as a bridge between America’s pioneering past and its industrial future.
