Arkansas
The flag of Arkansas is a bold and symbolic reflection of the state’s place in the American story. Designed by Willie Kavanaugh Hocker and adopted in 1913, it features a red field with a large white diamond bordered in blue and studded with twenty-five stars, representing Arkansas’s status as the twenty-fifth state to join the Union. Inside the diamond, the word “ARKANSAS” sits above four blue stars—three below and one above—symbolizing the nations that have claimed the territory (Spain, France, and the United States), with the fourth representing its membership in the Confederacy. The diamond itself nods to Arkansas as the nation’s only diamond-producing state, while the colors red, white, and blue reaffirm loyalty to the Union. Altogether, it’s a geometric statement of pride, geography, and complex heritage—frontier ambition set in patriotic symmetry.
