History

Oklahoma

The flag of Oklahoma is a graceful union of Native American symbolism and frontier heritage. Adopted in its current form in 1925, it features a sky-blue field—borrowed from the flag carried by Choctaw soldiers during World War I—with a traditional Osage Nation buffalo-skin shield at its center. The shield is adorned with seven eagle feathers and crossed by a peace pipe and an olive branch, representing the harmony between Native and European traditions. Small golden crosses decorate the shield, drawn from Native motifs for stars. The flag’s design was meant to heal divides and celebrate Oklahoma’s diverse peoples, replacing an earlier flag that bore a red background and a single white star—too easily mistaken for a symbol of communism. It’s a flag of reconciliation, strength, and peace on the Great Plains.
