The flag of North Dakota is a vivid symbol of military heritage and national pride, adopted in 1911 and modeled closely after the regimental flag carried by North Dakota soldiers during the Philippine–American War. Set on a dark blue field, the flag features a bold American bald eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch—emblems of war and peace. In its beak, the eagle holds a flowing red ribbon inscribed with “E Pluribus Unum,” the U.S. national motto, while a sunburst of thirteen stars radiates above, representing the original colonies. Below the eagle, a scroll bears the words “North Dakota.” The design ties the state directly to the broader American story—frontier-born, battle-tested, and fiercely loyal to the Union.
