South Dakota
The flag of South Dakota is a radiant emblem of sunshine and industrious spirit. Adopted in its modern form in 1963, it features the state seal surrounded by golden rays on a sky-blue field, encircled by the words “South Dakota” and “The Mount Rushmore State.” The central seal captures the state’s character: a riverboat on the Missouri River, a farmer and a miner representing agriculture and industry, and hills rising beyond the plains. The surrounding sunburst symbolizes South Dakota’s official nickname, “The Sunshine State,” chosen before Mount Rushmore became the defining symbol. Its bright, clean design reflects optimism and self-sufficiency—an image of a state shaped by open skies, fertile land, and monumental ambition.
