History
Delaware
The flag of Delaware is one of the oldest in the United States and proudly reflects its Revolutionary heritage. Adopted in 1913, it features a buff-colored diamond on a field of colonial blue—colors drawn from the uniform of General George Washington’s army. Inside the diamond sits the state coat of arms, a tableau of agriculture, trade, and liberty: a farmer and a militiaman flank a shield showing wheat, corn, and an ox, symbols of prosperity and rural strength. Beneath it lies the state motto, Liberty and Independence, and above flies a sailing ship, marking Delaware’s coastal commerce. Below the diamond, the date “December 7, 1787” commemorates Delaware’s proud distinction as the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. The flag’s warm hues and colonial imagery make it both historic and deeply personal—a salute to a small state with a first-in-line legacy.
