New Jersey
The flag of New Jersey is a reflection of colonial heritage and classical symbolism, balancing refinement with revolutionary pride. Adopted in 1896, it features the state coat of arms centered on a buff-colored field—a shade said to match the facings on the uniforms of New Jersey troops during the Revolutionary War. The coat of arms shows three plows on a blue shield, representing the state’s agricultural foundation, and above it, a horse’s head crest symbolizing strength and vitality. Flanking the shield are the goddesses Liberty, holding a staff and Phrygian cap, and Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, bearing a cornucopia of harvest bounty. Beneath them unfurls a banner reading Liberty and Prosperity, the state motto adopted in 1776. The flag’s gentle tones and neoclassical imagery convey both refinement and resilience—a reminder that New Jersey’s wealth was always cultivated by freedom and labor.
