History
South Carolina
The flag of South Carolina is one of the most recognizable and beloved in the United States, its design simple yet steeped in Revolutionary symbolism. First used by state troops during the American Revolution and officially adopted in 1861, it features a white palmetto tree on a deep indigo field, with a white crescent in the upper left corner. The palmetto recalls the defense of Sullivan’s Island in 1776, when a fort made of palmetto logs absorbed British cannon fire, helping secure an early American victory. The crescent, long debated in meaning, most likely represents the silver emblem worn on the caps of South Carolina troops. The indigo background honors one of the colony’s key crops. Elegant in its restraint, the flag embodies resilience, independence, and Southern pride rooted in history.
