The flag of Alabama is a study in bold minimalism, rooted in both medieval and Southern imagery. Adopted in 1895, it consists of a crimson St. Andrew’s cross, or saltire, on a white field. The design is simple yet striking: two diagonal red bars that form an “X.” Though often linked to the Confederate battle flag, the inspiration is more broadly tied to the heraldic crosses of St. Andrew, long used in European flags. The white background represents purity and courage, while the crimson cross evokes the bravery and sacrifice of those who shaped the state’s early identity. Its uncluttered form gives it an enduring clarity—an emblem as direct and unadorned as the Alabama landscape itself.
