History
Alaska
The flag of Alaska is a graceful and poetic design created by a thirteen-year-old boy, Benny Benson, in 1927. His winning concept depicts the Big Dipper and the North Star in gold on a dark blue field. The Big Dipper, part of the constellation Ursa Major, represents strength and the state’s northern location, while the North Star stands for Alaska’s future as a constant guide—symbolizing its position as the northernmost state and its place among the United States. The deep blue background reflects the state’s expansive sky and the waters of the Arctic and Pacific that define its geography. Despite its simplicity, the flag carries immense meaning: a child’s vision of place, permanence, and belonging on the edge of the world.
