History
Wisconsin
The flag of Wisconsin is a straightforward but symbolic tribute to industry, unity, and statehood. Adopted in 1913 and later updated to include the word “WISCONSIN” and the year “1848,” it features the state coat of arms centered on a deep blue field. The coat of arms is brimming with imagery: a sailor and a miner stand beside a shield divided into four quadrants showing tools of labor—plow, pick and shovel, arm and hammer, and anchor—representing agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and navigation. At the top sits a badger, the state animal and emblem of tenacity, while a cornucopia and pyramid of lead ingots symbolize prosperity and natural wealth. The date marks Wisconsin’s admission to the Union, and the design as a whole speaks to balance between work, resilience, and reward—a practical flag for a hardworking state.
