Gadsden
The Gadsden Flag is one of the most enduring symbols of American independence and defiance. Designed in 1775 during the early days of the American Revolution by South Carolina statesman and general Christopher Gadsden, it features a coiled rattlesnake poised to strike on a bright yellow field, with the warning “Don’t Tread on Me” emblazoned below. The rattlesnake, a uniquely American creature, had already become a Revolutionary emblem through Benjamin Franklin’s writings, representing vigilance, courage, and the unity of the colonies—each segment of the snake symbolizing a different state. The flag was first carried by the Continental Marines, embodying the colonies’ resolve against British oppression. Over the centuries, it has been revived repeatedly as a banner of liberty, protest, and self-reliance—its coiled serpent still a reminder that freedom, once earned, must always be defended.
