Rhode Island
The flag of Rhode Island is a bright, elegant reflection of the state’s maritime roots and spiritual optimism. Officially adopted in 1897, it features a golden anchor encircled by thirteen gold stars on a pure white field, with a flowing blue ribbon below bearing the single word Hope. The anchor—used as a symbol since colonial times—comes from a biblical phrase in Hebrews referring to hope as “an anchor of the soul,” a fitting emblem for one of the earliest colonies to guarantee religious freedom. The thirteen stars represent the original colonies, while the white background stands for purity and peace. With its clean lines and nautical symbolism, the flag mirrors Rhode Island itself: small in size but steadfast in principle, a coastal beacon of faith and independence.
