History
Michigan
The flag of Michigan is a heraldic echo of the state’s frontier history and its place at the heart of the Great Lakes. Adopted in 1911, it features the state’s coat of arms on a deep blue field, closely resembling the national flag’s layout but rich in uniquely Michigan symbols. At its center is a shield showing a man standing on a peninsula, hand raised in peace but holding a rifle—a nod to both hospitality and readiness to defend liberty. Behind him, a bright sun rises over Lake Huron, symbolizing hope and natural beauty. Flanking the shield are an elk and a moose, creatures native to the region and symbols of strength, while an eagle above ties Michigan to the Union. The Latin mottos translate to “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you,” and “I will defend it”—a fitting declaration from a state defined by water, wilderness, and resilience.
