History
Maine
The flag of Maine reflects the calm dignity and natural wealth of New England’s northernmost state. Adopted in 1909, it features the state coat of arms centered on a deep blue field, mirroring the color of the national flag. At its heart is a pastoral scene showing a moose resting beneath a pine tree—symbols of Maine’s wilderness and its long reliance on forestry and wildlife. Flanking the shield stand a farmer and a sailor, representing agriculture and maritime trade, the twin pillars of Maine’s early economy. Above them shines a five-pointed star with the Latin word Dirigo, meaning “I Lead,” a proud nod to Maine’s role as a guiding light for the young United States—it was once the northernmost state and the first to see the sunrise. Altogether, the flag is understated but resolute, much like the people and landscape it represents.
