History
Montana
The flag of Montana is a rugged reflection of its frontier origins and natural wealth. Officially adopted in 1905, it features the state seal centered on a field of deep blue, with the name “Montana” boldly displayed above in gold letters. The seal depicts a sweeping landscape of mountains, forests, and rivers, with a plow and pickaxe in the foreground—symbols of agriculture and mining, the twin foundations of Montana’s early economy. A brilliant sunrise illuminates the scene, suggesting new beginnings on the western frontier. Beneath it all runs the state motto, Oro y Plata, Spanish for “Gold and Silver,” a nod to the mineral riches that drew settlers to the region. The flag’s unembellished design mirrors Montana itself: vast, resourceful, and quietly majestic.
