The flag of Austria is one of the oldest national flags in the world, featuring three horizontal stripes of red, white, and red. According to legend, the design dates to 1191, when Duke Leopold V of Austria fought so fiercely during the Siege of Acre in the Third Crusade that his white surcoat was entirely soaked in blood—except for the strip beneath his belt. Emperor Henry VI reportedly granted him the red-white-red banner in recognition. While the legend is likely apocryphal, the colors have been associated with Austrian identity since at least the thirteenth century, making them among the most enduring national symbols anywhere. The flag was officially readopted in 1945 after the fall of Nazi Germany. Simple, ancient, and unmistakable, Austria's flag carries nearly a millennium of history in just three bold stripes.
