The flag of Moldova is a vertical tricolor of blue, yellow, and red with the national coat of arms centered on the yellow stripe. Adopted in 1990 as Moldova declared sovereignty from the Soviet Union, the design is nearly identical to Romania's flag, reflecting the deep cultural, linguistic, and historical ties between the two nations—Moldova was part of the historical Principality of Moldavia, which later united with Wallachia to form Romania. The coat of arms features a dark golden eagle holding an Orthodox cross, an olive branch, and a scepter, with a shield bearing an aurochs head—the ancient symbol of Moldavia. Moldova's flag tells the story of a small nation caught between empires, its identity shaped by Romanian heritage, Soviet history, and the ongoing question of where it belongs in the map of modern Europe.
