Canada / Ukraine
The Canada–Ukraine split flag represents one of the strongest diaspora bonds in the world. Canada is home to nearly 1.4 million people of Ukrainian descent—the largest Ukrainian population outside of Ukraine and Russia—with roots stretching back to the 1890s when settlers arrived to farm the prairies of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. One half carries the Canadian maple leaf, the other Ukraine's blue and yellow bicolor representing sky over wheat fields. The relationship deepened dramatically after 2022, when Canada became one of Ukraine's most vocal supporters, welcoming hundreds of thousands of displaced Ukrainians through the CUAET emergency travel program. This split flag is carried by generations of Ukrainian Canadians whose identity bridges the prairies and the steppe—a symbol of solidarity that was personal long before it became geopolitical.
