History
Canadian Red Ensign
The Canadian Red Ensign served as Canada’s de facto national flag for nearly a century, symbolizing both its British heritage and emerging national identity. Originating in the late 19th century, it consisted of the British Red Ensign—a red field with the Union Jack in the upper left—defaced with the Canadian coat of arms on the fly. Early versions displayed provincial shields, but by 1921 the modern coat of arms of Canada was standardized, representing unity among the founding provinces. The Red Ensign flew proudly during both World Wars, becoming deeply associated with Canadian bravery and sacrifice overseas. Though officially replaced by the Maple Leaf flag in 1965, it remains a poignant emblem of Canada’s evolution from colony to nation—rooted in tradition, yet ever seeking its own identity.
