History

Nunavut

The flag of Nunavut, adopted in 1999 to mark Canada’s newest territory, is one of the most distinctive and meaningful in the country. It features two vertical panels of gold and white—colors representing the land’s riches and the snow and ice that define it. Centered between them stands a red inuksuk, a traditional stone monument used by the Inuit to guide travelers and mark sacred places. In the upper fly corner, a blue star—Niqirtsuituq, or the North Star—symbolizes guidance and leadership, particularly that of the elders within the community. The flag’s colors of red, blue, gold, and white connect it to both Inuit culture and the broader Canadian identity. Its design, created in collaboration with Inuit artists, is a visual statement of balance between tradition and modern nationhood—an emblem of a people deeply connected to the land and sky of the North.
