The flag of Australia was chosen through a public design competition in 1901, the same year the six colonies federated into a single nation. It features the Union Jack in the upper canton, acknowledging Australia's British heritage, alongside the Commonwealth Star—a seven-pointed star representing the six states and the territories—and the Southern Cross constellation, visible year-round from the Southern Hemisphere. The deep blue field evokes the vast Pacific and Indian Oceans that surround the island continent. The Southern Cross has long been a navigational symbol and a marker of identity for those living below the equator. While debates about replacing the Union Jack have surfaced over the decades, the flag endures as a bridge between colonial origins and modern nationhood—a design that looks simultaneously backward to its roots and upward to the stars.
