The flag of New Zealand features the Union Jack in the upper canton and four red stars with white borders representing the Southern Cross constellation on a deep blue field. Adopted in 1902, it acknowledges New Zealand's history as a British colony while the Southern Cross—one of the most visible constellations from the Southern Hemisphere—anchors the design in the Pacific. The four stars (Acrux, Becrux, Gacrux, and Delta Crucis) have been associated with New Zealand since early Māori navigation and European exploration. While a 2016 referendum considered replacing the flag with a silver fern design, voters chose to keep the existing banner. The flag occupies a complex space: colonial heritage and Southern Hemisphere identity, tradition and evolving nationhood—a design that New Zealanders decided, for now, still tells their story.
