The flag of Ontario, adopted in 1965, reflects both its British heritage and Canadian identity. It features a red field with the Union Jack in the upper left corner and the provincial shield on the right. The shield displays three golden maple leaves on a green background beneath the red cross of St. George, England’s patron saint. The maple leaves symbolize Canada and unity within the Confederation, while the cross acknowledges Ontario’s colonial origins. Adopted shortly after Canada introduced the Maple Leaf flag, Ontario’s design preserved the familiar Red Ensign aesthetic cherished by many citizens. The result is a flag that bridges past and present—an emblem of continuity and pride in a province that has long stood at the center of Canada’s story.
