The flag of Portugal features a vertical bicolor of green and red with the national coat of arms centered on the color boundary. Adopted in 1911 after the republican revolution overthrew the monarchy, the design broke dramatically from the traditional royal blue and white. The green represents hope and the sea, while the red symbolizes the blood of those who fought for the nation. The coat of arms is layered with history: the central shield bears five smaller blue shields arranged in a cross, each containing five white dots—said to represent the five Moorish kings defeated by Afonso Henriques at the Battle of Ourique in 1139. The armillary sphere behind the shield honors Portugal's Age of Discovery, when Portuguese navigators charted the world's oceans. Few flags pack as much history into a single emblem.
