The flag of Colombia features three horizontal stripes—a wide yellow band on top, with narrower blue and red bands below—adopted in 1861 but based on a design attributed to Francisco de Miranda from 1806. Miranda, a Venezuelan revolutionary and precursor to Simón Bolívar, reportedly conceived the yellow-blue-red tricolor to represent the New World separated from Spain by the blue ocean, though other interpretations abound. Yellow symbolizes the gold and riches of the land, blue represents the seas and skies, and red honors the blood spilled for independence. The yellow stripe is deliberately twice the width of the others, giving the flag its distinctive proportions. Colombia shares its tricolor heritage with Ecuador and Venezuela—all former territories of Gran Colombia—making it a flag born from shared revolution and Bolívar's dream of a united South America.
