The flag of Chile features a white and red horizontal bicolor with a blue canton bearing a single white five-pointed star, earning it the nickname La Estrella Solitaria—the Lone Star. Adopted in 1817 during the Chilean War of Independence from Spain, its design is attributed to Minister José Ignacio Zenteno. The white stripe represents the snow of the Andes, the red symbolizes the blood shed for independence, and the blue stands for the Pacific sky. The lone star guides the nation toward progress and honor. While it bears a resemblance to the Texas flag, Chile's design predates it by more than two decades. Simple, striking, and rooted in the drama of revolution against colonial rule, Chile's flag carries the spirit of a long, narrow nation squeezed between mountains and sea.
