The flag of Venezuela features horizontal stripes of yellow, blue, and red with an arc of eight white five-pointed stars on the blue stripe. The tricolor, shared with Colombia and Ecuador, traces its origin to Francisco de Miranda's revolutionary banner of 1806, representing the New World (yellow gold) separated from Spain (red blood) by the Atlantic (blue ocean). The eight stars represent the eight provinces that supported Venezuelan independence in 1811. The current version was adopted in 2006, adding an eighth star to honor Simón Bolívar's decree. Yellow symbolizes the wealth of the land, blue the sea separating Venezuela from Spain, and red the blood spilled for liberation. Venezuela's flag carries the dream of Bolívar's Gran Colombia—a united South America—in every stripe, even as the nation continues its turbulent search for stability.
