The flag of Jamaica features a gold saltire—a diagonal cross—dividing the flag into four triangles of green and black. Adopted on August 6, 1962, the day Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom, it is one of only two national flags that use neither red, white, nor blue (the other being Mauritania's). The gold represents the island's sunshine and natural wealth, green stands for the lush vegetation and hope for the future, and black symbolizes the strength and creativity of the Jamaican people. The original motto associated with the colors—'Hardships there are but the land is green and the sun shineth'—captures the island's spirit perfectly. Jamaica's flag is as distinctive and vibrant as the culture it represents: reggae, Blue Mountain coffee, sprinters, and a fierce independence that punches far above its small island weight.
