Prince Edward Island
The flag of Prince Edward Island is rich in heraldic tradition and island symbolism. Adopted in 1964, it is based on the colonial seal granted in 1769 and framed with a distinctive red and white border of alternating rectangles—a nod to early British maritime flags. The central design, set on a white field, shows a large oak tree sheltering three smaller saplings, representing England protecting the island’s three historical counties: Prince, Queens, and Kings. Above the scene is a gold lion passant from the Royal Arms of England, symbolizing loyalty to the Crown. The flag’s design captures both the island’s British roots and its quiet resilience—a small province under the protection of tradition yet thriving with its own strong identity.
