The flag of Seychelles is one of the most visually distinctive national flags in the world, featuring five oblique bands of blue, yellow, red, white, and green radiating from the lower-left corner. Adopted in 1996, the current design replaced two earlier post-independence flags and was created to symbolize a new era of multiparty democracy. Blue represents the sky and sea surrounding the archipelago, yellow the sun, red the people's determination, white social justice, and green the land and natural environment. The radiating design suggests dynamism, forward movement, and the diverse elements of Seychellois society coming together from a single point. Seychelles is a nation of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean with a Creole culture blending African, Asian, and European influences—and its flag captures that kaleidoscopic identity in a burst of color unlike any other.
