The flag of Greece features nine horizontal stripes of blue and white with a white cross on a blue canton in the upper left corner. Adopted in 1822 during the Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire, the nine stripes are popularly said to represent the nine syllables of the Greek motto Elefthería í Thánatos—Freedom or Death—though this connection is debated by scholars.
