History

Betsey Ross

The Betsey Ross Flag is one of the earliest and most enduring versions of the American flag, surrounded by equal parts legend and patriotic lore. According to popular tradition, Philadelphia upholsterer Betsey Ross sewed the first flag in 1776 at the request of George Washington and other members of the Continental Congress, though historians debate whether this meeting actually occurred. The flag features thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen white stars arranged in a circle on a blue canton—each star representing one of the original colonies, the circle symbolizing their unity. While its exact origins remain uncertain, the design became an icon of the Revolution, embodying the new nation’s ideals of independence, equality, and shared purpose. Even today, the Betsey Ross Flag endures as a romantic emblem of America’s birth and the human hands that helped stitch it together.
