Union Jack of the United States (2024+)
The Union Jack of the United States is the current jack flown by U.S. Navy ships, restored in 2024 after a twenty-two-year hiatus. The design features fifty white stars on a blue field—essentially the canton of the American flag—and has served as the Navy's traditional jack for most of its history. From 2002 to 2024, the Navy flew the First Navy Jack (the Don't Tread on Me rattlesnake flag) as a symbol of resolve during the War on Terror, but the order was reversed to return to the traditional Union Jack. The jack is flown from the bow of every commissioned Navy vessel while in port, distinguishing it from the national ensign at the stern. It's a subtle but meaningful flag—the American stars without the stripes, signaling that a warship of the United States Navy is present and accounted for.
