Navy Jack
The Navy Jack is a historic American flag featuring a rattlesnake stretched across thirteen red and white stripes with the motto Don't Tread on Me. Its origins trace to the early days of the American Revolution, when it is believed to have been flown by Continental Navy ships as a jack—a small flag flown from the bow. The rattlesnake was a popular symbol of American resistance, chosen because it never strikes without warning and its bite is deadly. Benjamin Franklin famously promoted the rattlesnake as an emblem of American vigilance and determination. The U.S. Navy periodically revives the flag, most recently ordering all ships to fly it from 2002 to 2019 in response to the War on Terror. It's a flag that says what it means, coiled and ready—a founding-era warning that endures.
